Master's in Research

Astronomy & Astrophysics

The IAS is heavily involved in the Master 2 program in Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Space Engineering.

This program, which is unique in France, is supported by several institutions in the Île-de-France region that have formed a federation: Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL: Observatoire de Paris & École Normale Supérieure), Sorbonne Université, Université Paris Cité, and Université Paris-Saclay. The Master 2 program is overseen by a steering committee comprising members from each of these institutions and offers two tracks:

  • The primary purpose of the Astrophysics and Dynamics of Gravitational Systems (DSG) tracks is to train students in astrophysics research.Mathieu Vincendon, a professor at Paris-Saclay University and a researcher at the IAS, is the Paris-Saclay University coordinator for these two tracks.
  • The Astronomy and Space Tools and Systems track is designed to train engineers for major observational projects in astronomy and space. Bruno Maffei, a professor at Paris-Saclay University and a researcher at the IAS, is the Paris-Saclay University coordinator for the OSAE track.
Many faculty members, researchers, engineers, and technicians from Paris-Saclay and the IAS are participating in these training sessions.
  • For the Astrophysics track, we offer courses in Stellar Physics (J. Marques, with R.-M. Ouazzani), Planets and Small Bodies (M. Vincendon, with A. Spiga), Solar Physics—Solar Activity (M. Janvier, with S. Masson), Cosmology (M. Langer), as well as courses in research methodology
  • The involvement of IAS and Université Paris-Saclay faculty members in the M2 OSAE program is detailed on another page.

Nuclei, Particles, Astroparticles, and Cosmology

The IAS is involved in the Master 2 program in Nuclei, Particles, Astroparticles, and Cosmology, primarily in the area of teaching:
  • Computer Science Internship: Solving a problem in astrophysics or cosmology. Examples: detection and characterization of cosmological microwave background fluctuations in WMAP or Planck data; infrared galaxies: characterization of PAHs in spectral energy distributions (Spitzer/IRS); optimization of the detection of galaxy clusters via the SZ effect in Planck data.

Planetology

The IAS is involved in the Île-de-France Master’s Program (1 & 2) in Planetary Science, a program that focuses on planetary science and related disciplines. This Master’s program is recognized as a specialization at Paris-Saclay University, but it can also be pursued as a track.

Classes are held at major research institutions in Paris or the surrounding area. This program offers students:
  • Proximity to research laboratories,
  • An opportunity for international collaborations, particularly in the space sector.

Optics, Matter, and Plasmas

The IAS is involved in the Master’s program in Optics, Matter, and Plasmas. Courses include: fluid and kinetic models, waves and instabilities in plasmas, nonlinear phenomena, and plasma modeling and simulation. This master’s program offers elective modules dedicated to astrophysics, including “Astrophysical Plasmas.”
