Training Objective

The main objective of the doctoral courses atDoctoral School 127 (Astronomy and Astrophysics of Île-de-France) is to provide doctoral students with training that complements their dissertation, whether by introducing them to new scientific topics, methods, or skills, or by deepening their understanding of certain concepts already covered, in fields related to or distinct from those of their dissertation.
It is also important to highlight the value of the dissertation as professional experience, with the goal of facilitating career entry after the defense, whether within or outside the field of academic research. This requires gathering information and reflecting on all potential career paths.

Course Content

Training during the doctoral program atDoctoral School 127 consists of a lump-sum allowance distributed as follows:

1. Participation in a thematic school (“summer/winter school”) on the thesis topic or on a different topic.

This course must last at least 3 days; they usually last 1–2 weeks.

Please note: A scientific conference in your field—such as those your team typically attends—does not constitute a thematic workshop.

2. Followed bya short training module on scientific ethics.

This training is a contractual requirement of the doctoral program. We require that this training last at least 2 hours. It typically lasts half a day to a full day. This type of training is not provided directly by the doctoral school. You can find such training, for example, on the ADUM platform or through announcements from various organizations. The doctoral school will forward some of these announcements to you when they become available. Please note that online formats (such as MOOCs) are accepted; for more information, see, for example, FUN MOOC.

3. Followed by one or more training sessions (10 days or 60 hours), to be conducted in various formats:

  • Courses offered by ED 127 (see list below);
  • External training programs offered by other doctoral schools (accessible via ADUM or by contacting the doctoral schools directly);
  • M2-level courses other than those in the original M2 program (or optional courses that were not taken);
  • Took courses at the Collège de France;
  • Participation in doctoral programs offered by universities;
  • Other external training courses. These are offered through ADUM or elsewhere.

If you are a teacher or are performing an additional assignment:

Doctoral students who are engaged in supplementary assignments or part-time teaching have their required training hours reduced by a number of hours calculated at a rate of 10 hours for every 32 days of supplementary assignment or for every 64 hours of tutorial equivalent in the case of teaching. Training related to these assignments—whether mandatory or not—may be counted in addition to this reduction, up to a maximum of 15 hours.

It’s up to you to take the initiative in finding a program and enrolling—don’t wait until the final months of your dissertation!

Notes:

  • Doctoral students who wish to do so may take more courses than the package described above.
  • It is strongly recommended that students complete the bulk of their doctoral training during the first two years of their dissertation.
  • This training package can be completed in any order.
  • Training hours may be tallied differently by our doctoral program and by the training providers. For any certificate requested at the end of the dissertation process for an application, the actual training hours completed will be listed, not those tallied by the doctoral program.
  • Except in exceptional cases and except for the short ethics course, MOOCs and any other online courses that do not involve interaction with an instructor are not included in the training package. Doctoral students are, however, free to take these courses if they wish.

Course Registration Procedure

Registration for ED 127 courses is done through the ADUM online portal. Go to the“Programs”tab, then“Catalog,” and select the modules you want; you will then receive an email confirming your registration.

– For doctoral students in ED 127: before the deadline announced at the start of each academic year (in the fall).
– For doctoral students from other doctoral schools: enrollment is subject to availability and requires confirmation from the program director. Be sure to verify that the course’s level and prerequisites are compatible with your background! If you have any questions, contact the program’s academic director.

Doctoral training notoffered by ED127 (modules, thematic schools, M2 courses, etc.): ED127 doctoral students must submit a request via email to the ED127 doctoral program coordinator, who will approve or deny the training request. If the request is approved, the doctoral student must register independently (via ADUM or directly if the course is not available on ADUM). Once you have obtained the certificate, update this course information on your ADUM profile and upload the certificate.

No prior application is required for the ED127 modules or the thematic schools listed on this page, which are automatically considered approved.

All registrations are binding.
Exceptions will be made only in exceptional circumstances, and cancellations must be made several weeks before the start of the module.

Useful Information

Ph.D. students not enrolled in ED 127: Any Ph.D. student from another doctoral school, including those from abroad, may take the courses offered by ED 127, subject to availability; he or she may receive a certificate of participation.

Language: Most courses are taught in English: check ADUM, and if you have any questions, contact the program director.

Travel Expenses for Thematic Schools: Limited financial support is available to cover travel expenses for thematic schools. Please fill out and submit the form. More information [here]. Be sure to submit this request several weeks in advance.

For doctoral candidates studying abroad: The requirement to take doctoral courses remains in effect but has been adapted and reduced: doctoral candidates may take courses during their stay in France or design a program tailored to their geographic location. This program and the number of course hours must be developed in consultation with the program director and the thesis advisor. Contact should be made with these individuals at the start of the thesis.

The Elbereth Conference for Doctoral Students in Astronomy and Astrophysics in the Île-de-France Region

The Elbereth Conference is held every year in the fall at the Paris Observatory.

This conference was created at the initiative of doctoral students and is entirely organized and run by them. While a few keynote talks on various topics in astrophysics feature guest researchers, the bulk of the conference consists of presentations and discussions by and for doctoral students.

This is an excellent opportunity to meet and become part of the young scientific community in astrophysics, and it provides a welcoming academic setting in which to present one’s work. In addition, it is an opportunity to hone one’s oral communication skills.

This conference is not mandatory (and is not included in the doctoral program), but participation is recommended—either as an organizer and/or by presenting your work orally. It is primarily intended for first- and second-year doctoral students, and even a research project that was recently started is worth presenting orally and discussing. It is, therefore, a valuable academic experience in its own right and an opportunity to develop communication skills.

If you would like to attend this conference but your team or advisors discourage or even prohibit you from doing so, please feel free to contact the doctoral program director and refer your advisors to this page.
